This Bear Relaxing in a Pond Is Living Its Best Life

It feels so serendipitous when someone puts a trail cam in the exact right spot. Whether the camera captures an intense standoff, a hilarious situation, or a zen moment, it’s both fun and interesting to see what wild animals get up to when they think no humans are watching. Take, for instance, a big black bear relaxing in a pond in South Lake Tahoe, California earlier this week. It’s just living its best life, and we feel privileged to witness it.

Tahoe Toogee (aka Toogee Sielsch) operates some trail cameras in the greater Lake Tahoe area, and he frequently captures footage of wild black bears. He posted a trail-cam video from Tuesday on his Instagram page, which has well over 10,000 followers.

“A Tahoe black bear’s definition of ‘Totally Chill’!” Toogee’s caption reads. “Another satisfied customer at Tam’s Pond. As the California black bear population grows, Tam ought to think about a franchise oppurtunity [sic]. Lol!”

We don’t know who Tam is, but we’re glad he or she keeps tabs on this pond and the wildlife that visit it.

Black bears can have black fur or brown fur. Brown bears (like grizzlies) no longer live in California, so this is undoubtedly a black bear.
