Sound on: Elk Bugling Is Other Worldly

The other-worldly tune of an elk bugling is one of those sounds in nature that can be beautiful or eerie, depending on person listening and on the situation. Harry Collins is a wildlife photographer who captured some of the bizarre variations of elk bugles wonderfully. He created a compilation video of some of those bugling sounds and shared it with his followers.

According to the National Park Service (NPS), elk bugling coincide with elk rut, which starts in the fall. “During this time, male elk (called bulls) compete for females (called cows) by fighting with their antlers and making a loud wailing bugle,” NPS says. “This bugle heralds fall in the western United States and can be heard from dusk until dawn in the park each year.”

Collins shared the video to celebrate the coming rut season.

“Just a few weeks away from the best time of year. Elk bugling during the rut,” Collins writes in his video’s caption.
