Mountain Biker Dies in Tragic Accident at National Championships

The 2024 Gravity Mountain Bike National Championships wrapped up on Sunday, August 4. The championships included four full days of practice sessions, qualifying rounds, and finals in Ride Rock Creek, North Carolina. Events included enduro, dual slalom, and downhill competitions. A tragic accident during a downhill final left one mountain biker, Scott Huntley, fatally injured.

“On Sunday, August 4, Scott Huntley crashed during the Cat 1 35-39 downhill race at the 2024 Gravity Mountain Bike National Championships,” said USA Cycling in a press release. “Event medical staff promptly attended to him on course, and he was transported to a local hospital. Mr. Huntley succumbed to his injuries and passed away later that evening.”

Huntley was participating in the Category 1 Expert class downhill race in the 35-39 age category when he reportedly crashed hard into a tree.

On social media, Eastern State Cup wrote: “A friend to all, an always positive energy, and forever a part of our hearts . . . Scott was the ultimate competitor, and yet still, he’d make time to help anyone who needed it. His smile and attitude were contagious, his humor always on point and his love for the sport will all be missed dearly. Today we retire his plate number #401 as a tribute to one of the best to ever do it.”

Our condolences to Huntley’s family for this tragic loss.
