Moose Enters Group Campsite and ‘Attacks’ Tent

“This is why many Alaskans are more afraid of moose than bears,” wrote Christy, who goes by fromthestates on Instagram, in a post showing a moose in her group’s campsite. The footage shows the moose sniffing around and starting to tear into a tent. Christy says the animal ended up damaging the rainfly and the tent itself.

“Last week we were camping with a group of 40+ people. However, this moose had no fear of us,” she wrote in her Instagram post sharing the video. “It came into our campsite and attacked one of our tents. It ended up tearing the tent and rain fly in several places. I can’t imagine what would have happened if it had been a few hours later and children had been sleeping in the tent!”

Apparently, the moose did more than just poke around the campsite and tear into a tent; it also followed half the group around in the woods until they were able to seek shelter in their vehicles. Thankfully, Christy says local police and the Fish and Game Department chased the moose away, and no one got hurt.

“This is not common behavior for moose,” Christy added. “They will stand their ground and chase people/dogs away. However, going after people (and tents) to this extent is not common at all.”

She says her family didn’t sleep in their tent that night (they slept in the car instead).
