Elusive ‘Ghost of the Mountains’ Caught on Camera in Central Asia

Snow leopards aren’t easy to photograph. These “ghosts of the mountains” live in northern and central Asia’s high mountains, including the Himalayas, sometimes up to 18,000 feet in elevation. Who would brave such rugged conditions for a chance to glimpse a ghost? Thomas Vijayan did, and the snow leopard photos he took are next level.

Vijayan is an award-winning nature and wildlife photographer and a Nikon Ambassador whose work speaks for itself. In one of his Instagram posts sharing about the trek he took to photograph a snow leopard, he says the difficult journey was “unforgettable.”

“Photographing a snow leopard in the wild is a dream come true for any wildlife photographer, and I was fortunate to get close enough to capture this elusive beauty with my 100-400mm lens,” Vijayan said. “The moment felt even more special given the challenge of reaching the location. Just a few weeks after recovering from my first Covid experience, I undertook a gruelling [sic] six-hour uphill climb in Mongolia. It wasn’t an easy ascent, but the reward was worth it.”

In another post, he elaborates on the journey even further, saying: “This picture captures an unforgettable and crazy climb. It took me over 6 hours to ascend, battling challenging weather and high-altitude conditions. After a series of Covid attacks, every step was a challenge.”
