WATCH: Adorable Bison Video (Plus Fun Facts)

OK, we all know not to pet the fluffy cows, but let’s be honest, bison are pretty cute. The Nature Conservancy recently shared some adorable bison footage alongside fun facts you might not already know about the largest land mammals in North America.

In the video, a bison sniffs, chews, and walks on top of the camera. A bison calf walks around wagging its tiny tail. (And more.)

The Nature Conservancy also shared a few fun facts in its Instagram post sharing the video. The organization wrote: “An American bison’s full Latin name is bison bison bison. Bison can jump up 6 feet vertically and 7 horizontally. Bison can consume more than 30lbs of grass in a day. [And] bison practice a behavior called wallowing, which involves rolling around in the dirt.”

To these, I’d add that American bison are the largest terrestrial animals currently living in North America. They can be up to 6.5 feet tall and up to 12.5 feet long, weighing up to 2,400 pounds. Bison once roamed the Great Plains in the millions, but today there are far fewer thanks to habitat loss and overhunting.
