VIDEO: A BASE Jumper Uses a Wingsuit in Yosemite National Park

National parks feature some of the most stunning landscapes in the country. With towering mountains and vast valleys, getting a bird’s-eye view offers a unique perspective. One BASE jumper recently used a wingsuit in Yosemite National Park, and luckily, he had a camera rolling.

Check out the video:

The video opens at the summit of a mountain, where Jack Propeck leaps off the edge. Propeck shares videos from all over the world with his wingsuit and BASE jumping adventures.

In this video, onlookers record as he plunges toward the valley below. In the distance, the iconic Half Dome is clearly visible.

The camera then cuts away to show Propeck soaring through the air in his wingsuit. Seconds later, he deploys his chute, allowing him to drift gently toward the ground.

People in the comments were quick to call out Propeck over concerns about performing such a stunt in a national park. Some noted that he could be fined or face other charges. Others worried about what the video might inspire, especially amid the ongoing government shutdown. (Propeck may be acknowledging the situation subtly by using Jimmy Eat World’s “Bleed American” as the audio on the video.)

Also, it’s important to mention that what Propeck is doing is legal. At least in this case. In a reply to at least one comment, he clears the air and says he had a permit for the maneuver.

While BASE jumping is generally illegal in the park, guidelines do suggest it’s okay if the park permits the activity.

In fact, there’s a long list of events and activities that require permits in national parks. For example, hosting a wedding or conducting commercial photography — such as filming an advertisement — both require approval. Drone use is governed by similar rules. More information is available on the National Park Service’s website.
