Trail cameras set up throughout Sri Phang Nga Forest Park in Thailand have captured an array of rare animals, according to park officials. This includes a “buffalo bear,” as well as a sambar deer and a mouse-deer. In Thailand, “buffalo bear” is another term for Asiatic black bear, which looks quite different from an American black bear. (For instance, Asiatic black bears have a light-colored crescent-moon-shaped marking on their chests.)

“The buffalo [bear] was found in the area is a good sign because buffalo is an animal that forages in fertile areas and requires a large area to forage,” said Thirapol Chatthai, the head of Sri Phanganga National Park, in a Facebook post on the park’s profile. “Its presence is therefore an indicator of the completeness of the ecosystem in the park.”
