See a Rare, 1-in-30-Million ‘Jack-o’-Lantern’ Lobster Named Jackie

A rare calico lobster named “Jack-o’-Lantern” (or “Jackie” for short) is now living at the Northeastern University’s Marine Science Center in Massachusetts. A Gloucester lobsterman reportedly captured the lobster and donated it to the university so the community can enjoy and learn from it. Marine scientists estimate it is a 1-in-30-million find.

“Meet Jack-o’-Lantern, or Jackie for short,” wrote the Northeastern University Marine Science Center in an Instagram post showing off the unique animal. “This rare calico lobster was caught off the coast of Massachusetts, and her striking orange and black coloring sent her right to Northeastern University’s Marine Science Center.”

In the video, a staff member explains that Jackie has this mottled black-and-orange appearance due to a pigment in her shell that compounded with other pigments in unique ways. Jackie joins “Neptune,” a rare blue lobster, in the Marine Science Center’s collection of weird crustaceans.
