Missing Hiker Survived 9 Days Eating Bugs and Drinking Pee

In June, Samuel Vengrinovich became lost while hiking in the Himalayas. He ended up falling and breaking his arm, and then wandering around for nine days by himself with no food or water. To survive the ordeal, the missing hiker ate “bugs” and drank his own pee. His family is seeking financial help to pay for expenses.

In an interview with People, Vengrinovich says he left a group camp with a couple other people to go for a short hike. As he did, the weather turned bad. Fog obscured the path, and Vengrinovich became separated from the others. In an attempt to figure out which direction he should go, Vengrinovich says he tried to leap onto a large rock, but he fell and injured his arm.

Officially in trouble, Vengrinovich says after the fall, he tried yelling for help, but eventually realized he would need to help himself. At some point, he saw structures in the distance and began walking toward civilization, eating insects he found along the way. Vengrinovich also says he drank his own urine to keep himself alive.
