Even a year and a half later, whenever the man kayaks out into the area where the otter lives, she comes to see him. Mats posts videos of these encounters with the otter, which he named Leya, on TikTok, and the TikTok community just can’t get enough of their sweet relationship.

A recent TikTok video shows Leya swimming up to see Mats in his kayak, then climbing into his boat to say hi. He doesn’t offer her any food, just a quick pet and his calm presence. In a separate video, Mats shares more about their story, saying he came across Leya in the nearby forest about a year and a half ago. When he was sure there were no parents coming back to her, Mats taught Leya how to swim and hunt, and then he released her back into the wild. She thriving on her own now, but he still comes to visit her.
