Ethan Sommer, a kayaker and angler, says he had one of the “wildest experiences of his life” recently when he came upon a 13-17-foot mystery fish in his fishing kayak. At first, Sommer wasn’t sure he wanted to be near the huge animal, but his curiosity got the better of him, and he ended up cautiously following the large fish and kayaking next to it for a while.
As he does, Sommer is stunned that the fish is as big as his kayak. He estimates it’s between 13 and 17 feet long. As for what it is, Sommer believes it’s a sawfish—a unique ray that looks a lot like a shark.

“Being in a kayak all the time you get some pretty amazing interactions with wildlife and this one takes the cake,” Sommer wrote in his Instagram post sharing the video. “I rolled up on what I believe to be a 13-17 foot sawfish in shallow water. I kayaked next to this beautiful beast for about 15-20 minutes just taking in her glory. A truly once in a lifetime experience I’ll never forget.”
