Have You Heard? Alex Honnold Is Doing a Free-Solo Climb LIVE

Alex Honnold, the famous rock climber and star of Free Solo, a 2018 documentary about Honnold’s free climb up Yosemite’s El Capitan without safety gear, is preparing for another free-solo climb—and this time he’s going to do it live. Netflix recently announced Honnold’s planned free climb of Taipei 101, a 1,667-foot skyscraper in Taiwan, during a two-hour special called Skyscraper Live. Netflix says we can expect to watch this harrowing feat early in 2026.

Taipei 101 is the 11th tallest building in the world, but it is less than half as high as El Cap. Still, Honnold has quite a task ahead of him; he’ll be doing this without ropes and with the pressure of the whole world watching.

Honnold will not be the first to climb Taipei 101—that accolade goes to the “French Spider Man,” Alain Robert, who climbed the building over 20 years ago. Although Robert is also famous for his free-solo climbs, he was required by the Taiwanese government to use a top rope when he climbed the massive building back in 2004.
