A brown bear attacked a man who underestimated the animal, and he lived to tell the tale. He also recorded the whole thing. The video starts out with a small-ish brown bear walking out of a treeline and crossing a road toward the person recording. A man’s chatter in the background suggests he’s pleased to see the bear. He calls it “buddy,” and clearly does not feel threatened. The bear doesn’t seem to be in an aggressive mood—that is, until it rears up on its back legs and smacks the phone out of the man’s hand, abruptly ending the video.
So, what happened?
The man behind the phone goes by bagalut_geographic on Instagram. He was in his vehicle visiting Mount Nemrut in Turkey, home to brown bears. In a follow-up video he’s since posted, the man explains that he felt safe because he was in his car (while other people were walking around and getting close to the bears).

His false sense of security could have become a death sentence, though, because the bear easily reached into the car’s open window. Instead of grabbing the man, the bear grabbed at the thing closest‚ his hand and the phone. This situation could have quickly turned into a deadly mauling. Thankfully, it didn’t.
