A Cyclist is Trying to Set a World Record by Biking the Entire East Coast

A cyclist is trying to get into the record books by biking the entire East Coast. Bond Almand aims to ride from Florida to Maine in less than 11 days and nine minutes to beat the current world record.

Biking the entire East Coast requires a rider to leave from Key West, Florida, and travel to Madawaska, Maine. In all, it’s 2,140 miles.

Almand has been documenting each day with posts on social media.

Here’s the video from day one:

In this clip, Almand states he needs to tackle at least 200 miles a day to break the record. However, his goal is to get closer to 300 miles a day.

In the first clip, he makes it to Vero Beach. Along the way, viewers can see what he’s dealing with in terms of bad weather and, at times, scary roadside rides with heavy traffic and other issues.

He documents other surprising issues along the way, including a moment in North Carolina when he got stuck trying to navigate around the Fort Bragg military base. In the video documenting that day (which was day four), Almand had to get creative. Eventually, after running into too many roadblocks, he chose to ride on the interstate for a few miles.

Challenges of Biking the Entire East Coast

As of Thursday, Almand has made it all the way to Pennsylvania. The journey seems far from easy, with a few major factors making it particularly difficult.

The first is where to stay. In some instances, he opts for a hotel when the weather is bad. But in other cases, he’s left stealth camping behind buildings and other places.

The other big challenge is fueling his body. He says he’s burning between 12,000 and 15,000 calories a day. Since Almand can’t carry days’ worth of food, he has to make a lot of stops. In most cases, that includes some unhealthy options at gas stations, but it is necessary to stay fueled.
