‘First Bear Family in These Mountains for Years’ (See Photos)

There’s a new mama bear in the Santa Monica Mountains of southern California, and scientists are calling her “adventurous.” The black bear, identified as Yellow 2291 or BB14, made her way to the coastal mountain range west of Los Angeles from the Angeles National Forest, which is northwest of the LA metropolitan area. To do so, she had to cross several major freeways. Once there, she gave birth to three cubs. Photos of the new bear family have wildlife lovers in the region excited.

“The Santa Monica Mountains have a new mama bear and she’s now roaming the Topanga Canyon area with her three cubs. It’s the first family of bears in these mountains in years,” wrote Los Padres ForestWatch in a Facebook post sharing photos of the family. “Her name is Yellow 2291, and you may remember her from last year when she made a remarkable 100-mile journey that began in the Angeles National Forest. From there, she wandered along the outskirts of the Los Angeles metro area, crossing four major freeways, eventually finding herself on the coast near Malibu.”
