Lake Powell closures continue as one of the most popular freshwater destinations struggles with a lack of water. The lake is a reservoir fed by the Colorado River that sits on the state line between Utah and Arizona.
Most years, the lake is a popular vacation destination with around two million visitors annually. However, recent drought conditions and low water levels along the Colorado River are drying up the reservoir.
The National Park Service has decided to close more boat launch ramps in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Starting Monday, August 18, the Wahweap Main Launch Ramp will be closed.
Additionally, the Rainbow Bridge Dock is being moved to deeper water on Monday, August 25. The move will limit some additional access until water levels rise.
According to local media, water levels at Lake Powell are about 30 feet below where they were a year ago. Recent drought conditions have the entire reservoir at just 31% full. While that may sound extremely low, Lake Powell has been lower. In April 2023, the lake dropped to 185 feet below its high-water mark.
Despite the closing of boat ramps, there is still access to the body of water. KSL.com reports a small handful of boat ramps remain open. This includes:
- The Wahweap Stateline Auxiliary
- Antelope Point Business
- Bullfrog North Launch
The low water levels also have officials warning boaters to be on the lookout for shallow areas. Spots they may have boated in previously may no longer be deep enough for a boat.
“Boaters are responsible for knowing the minimum water depth required for their vessel and trailer,” wrote the NPS in their press release. “Before visiting, check the park website and social media channels for the most current ramp and dock status.”
