Adorable ‘Pup-Date’ Shows New Wolf Pups on Trail Cam

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) spotted some new wolf pups on their trail cams, and that’s not all. The government organization posted the adorable trail-cam footage alongside an announcement that there are three new wolf packs in the state, suggesting CPW’s wolf-restoration plan is going well.

“A pup-date: Colorado now has new wolf pups and three new wolf packs,” wrote CPW in an Instagram post sharing trail-cam footage of the wolf pups. “We recognize wolf packs only after a breeding pair has reproduced. While our staff have seen pups at some dens, the total pup count for all of the packs has not been confirmed. The three new packs are: One Ear Pack in Jackson County, King Mountain Pack in Routt County, [and] Three Creeks Pack in Rio Blanco County.”

The footage shows three small pups playing with each other, making eye contact with the camera, and scratching an itch.

Successful pack formation is vital to the state’s wolf restoration plan, CPW says. But it’s important to note that not everyone in Colorado is thrilled about these apex predators’ comeback. Ranchers don’t love it when wolves snatch their livestock—and sometimes that happens.

Yesterday and today, CPW presented an update on the Wolf Program to the Parks and Wildlife Commission. This included updates on the state’s efforts to minimize and mitigate conflict.
