Costa Rica Tourists Find Tiny, Elusive ‘Tigrillo’ on Their Porch

“In the dense rainforests of Costa Rica, the elusive tigrillo (Leopardus wiedii), also known as the margay, moves silently among the trees,” writes EcoTourism Globaly on Instagram. The account shared a video from some tourists staying at an eco-lodge who were lucky enough to spot a tigrillo up close as it perched on the edge of their deck. The margay is tiny and adorable. It stares at the humans before deciding to move on.

“This small, nocturnal wild cat is an expert climber and a rare sight—an incredible example of the rich and fragile biodiversity that thrives in the country’s jungles,” EcoTourism Globaly adds.

The margay or “tigrillo” is one of six wild cats native to Costa Rica. Besides the margay, there is also the ocelot, the puma, the jaguarundi, the oncilla, and the jaguar.
