A freediver and group-travel leader in the Maldives has revealed her “scariest moment” of 2024, and it’s not what you might guess. While many might assume the freediver’s scariest moment involved an aggressive or curious shark, it actually involved a territorial moray eel.

“When curiosity turns into chaos . . . My most scary moment of 2024: a close call with a moray eel!” wrote the woman, who simply goes by Marine on social media. “Sometimes, the ocean reminds you who’s really in charge. Would you have kept your cool?”
In the video, Marine swims close to the eel, which turns on her and starts chasing her out of its space. Marine captures video of the eel as it chases her, and another person captures video of the scene from a little ways away.
