Rare Jaguarundi Pair Captured on Trail Cam in Honduras

Have you ever heard of a jaguarundi? These wild cats native to Central and South America have a unique appearance that gives them the nickname “otter cat.” (And, in fact, people often think they’re seeing an elusive jaguarundi when they’re really seeing a river otter.) These small cats are quite mysterious and secretive, but a trail cam in Honduras captured footage of a jaguarundi pair in the wild. The footage shows two jaguarundis up close, walking and sitting in front of the camera.

Panthera, a conservation organization dedicated to wild cats and their landscapes, shared the rare jaguarundi footage back in 2022. Also called “shadow cats,” jaguarundis apparently make 13 different calls, including including purring, whistling, and chirping. Scientists know relatively little about them, making footage like this very valuable.
