Roman Fedortsov is a deep-sea fisherman who works on a trawler in Russia, and he recently caught what appears to be an alien’s head. Of course, it’s not what it seems. Apparently, there’s a rational explanation for this monstrosity—it’s not an alien head but a fish (a weird one).

Fedortsov believes this bizarre animal is a smooth lumpfish (Aptocyclus ventricosus), a species of deep-water fish. That explanation seems to check out, but not everyone online is convinced. A video of the alien-head fish has gone viral on social media, and the comments prove that this fish’s other-worldly appearance is too much for some to accept as natural.
The most frequent comment seems to be some version of: “Put that thing back in the ocean.”
