Rare Black Leopard and Her Cub Spotted on Trail Cam (Video)


An “amazing” trail-cam capture shows a rare black leopard with her cub in Thailand’s Kaeng Krachan National Park. Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation recently shared the footage on its Facebook page, saying the “impressive images” of the special pair shows new evidence of genetic diversity in the park’s leopard population.

The social-media video actually shows two sets of footage featuring the same pair of leopards—one at night and one during the day. The two sightings were just days apart at the end of December.

“The image shows a female black leopard and a leopard that is believed to be its cub, reflecting the abundance of Kaeng Krachan forest, which is still home to many rare wildlife species,” the department wrote in its Facebook post sharing the trail-cam video. “Interestingly, this camera set is the same set that previously recorded images of tiger cubs, showing that this area is an important travel route for tigers in Kaeng Krachan forest. The sighting of the mother black leopard and cubs this time is important academic evidence showing the genetic diversity [in] nature.”
