A Pair of Rare Black Wolves in Polish Forest

A pair of rare black wolves crossed a stream in a forest in Poland, and a trail camera was there to catch the unique sighting on video. The Fundacja SAVE Wildlife Conservation Fund shared the footage on Facebook, saying the recording is from last summer in an undisclosed location.

“One of our camera traps recorded wolves with a significantly different color than usual. Black!” wrote the organization in its Facebook post sharing the video. “In case anyone doesn’t know, the standard wolf fur in our country is gray with slight reddish or black accents. The black [coloring] is definitely rare and unique!”

The wolves, one of which appears black, while the other appears dark gray, are likely siblings. According to the International Wolf Center, wolves with black coats have a gene called K-locus that wolves with more traditional coloring don’t have. Fundacja SAVE Wildlife Conservation Fund says it plans to conduct genetic tests on wolf feces in the area to try to learn more about these rare animals.
