A pod of orcas stunned surfers at a New Zealand beach when the animals started surfing too. People at a cafe up on the beach got to see the show as well, and one person caught the surfing orcas on video.

“What started as a typical surf session at Sunset Beach, Port Waikato, turned into a breathtaking encounter with nature for Liam Davies and Alex Griffiths,” wrote The New Zealand Herald in an Instagram post sharing the video. “The two surfers were joined in the waves by a pod of inquisitive orcas—creating an ‘unforgettable’ close encounter for the pair.”
One surfer said he was paddling out when suddenly he saw a “massive” orca surfing the wave in front of him.
“It was incredible. I’ve never seen anything like it,” he told The New Zealand Herald.
