Very Rare Footage of Wild Mambas Mating

Somewhere in the dense rainforests of Central America, two black-tailed Jameson’s mambas were getting busy, and a human was there with a camera, recording these snakes in the act of mating, possibly for the first time ever. Then, the humans posted the video to Instagram so the whole world could watch, too.

While the footage is scientifically important, it isn’t too steamy. It’s hard to figure out where one snake ends and the other one begins. However, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) calls the sighting “exceptional,” adding that Thomas Nicolon, the field herpetologist who captured the video, plans to write a scientific paper on it.

“This is very rare footage of Jameson’s mambas mating in [Democratic Republic of the Congo],” wrote WCS in its Instagram post. “We believe this behavior has never been documented in the wild but we are investigating.”
