Out of all the things Jake Vellinga expected to find on the trail the other day while he was mountain biking, a longhorn bull was not one of them. Vellinga’s helmet-mounted GoPro caught the moment he nearly crashed into a longhorn on film, and he shared it with the world on his Instagram page.
In the video, you see Vellinga biking on a relatively narrow trail in a forested area. Visibility isn’t great, since the trail twists and turns, and trees and other vegetation surround the trail on all sides.
Suddenly, after he goes through a bend at high speed, Vellinga (and viewers) see a huge longhorn bull. It’s calmly standing on the trail, and it’s clearly not moving. Vellinga reacts quickly. He skids, crashes, and somehow manages to control the urge to shout an expletive—although he does come close.
“Just minding my own business when all of a sudden . . .,” Vellinga writes in his video caption, leaving the rest as a surprise.

Those were some great reflexes on Vellinga’s part. We wonder if he’s over the pure shock of that bizarre encounter.
