Insane Mountain-Bike Trail Goes Through Dark, Underground Mine

The Black Hole trail in Slovenia is recommended for experienced mountain bikers only. That’s because it goes through five levels of an abandoned, underground mine. It’s gnarly, it’s dark, and it’s dangerous—what’s not to love?

The Mežica Mine is one of Europe’s oldest mines, and humans hauled lead and zinc out of it for hundreds of years. After closing in 1994, the mine reopened 25 years later as a place for adventure seekers to explore by foot, kayak, or mountain bike.

Described as a “challenging adventure for advanced and expert mountain bikers,” the Black Hole Trail is 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) long, taking riders from one side of the mountain to the other. It descends 150 meters (nearly 500 feet) through five levels of the former lead and zinc mine. Riders must go with a guide, and the experience takes 3-4 hours. It costs 75 Euros (about $82 USD) per person.

Professional mountain biker Rae Morrison recently rode the Black Hole Trail and shared her experience on YouTube. In the video, you watch from Morrison’s first-person helmet cam as she navigates the trail.
